The Economic and Political Effects of Twitter Ban in Nigeria

On June 5, 2021, the Nigerian government shut down the social media platform Twitter. Despite several condemnations from regional and global organisations, the Nigerian authorities did not heed the calls to restore the internet.

It took eight months for the government to lift the ban on Twitter, on January 13, 2022. The ban violated people’s rights to freedom online and increased the hardship for the media and journalists in accessing and disseminating information. The Twitter ban also seriously affected Nigeria’s digital economy.
