This report sets out the trends of freedom of expression violations in Zimbabwe, mainly by analysing violations against media practitioners working in Zimbabwe. The report covers the two-year period spanning from 1 January 2017 to 31 August 2019.
The major types of violations recorded in 2017 included arbitrary arrests and detentions, threats, physical attacks and harassment of journalists.
Although the year saw a remarkable decline in the number of FOE violations against journalists and other media practitioners in 2017 as compared to the previous year (2016). However, the severity of the nature of the violations recorded in 2017 raises serious concerns for the exercise of press freedom rights.
