About Us

The African Freedom of Expression Exchange (AFEX) is a continental network of some of the most prominent  freedom of expression and media rights organisations in Africa that are also members of the global network of free expression organisations, IFEX. The network is currently made up of twelve organisations spread across West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. Some of the members operate in more than on African country in a particular region. For instance, the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) works in eight countries in Southern Africa while the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) works in all 16 West African countries. AFEX seeks to promote freedom of expression and human rights on the continent through advocacy and campaigns, capacity building to ensure effectiveness of members and other free expression groups in the region .


The African Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression presents an absolute and unassailable framework for AFEX’s vision, which is:

“An Africa, where all peoples are free to express themselves.”


In pursuit of its vision, AFEX’s mission is:

“To increase the effectiveness of its members, in addressing freedom of expression challenges in Africa.”
